Meet Flying Fortress CrossFit: Elisa Davey

“I am originally from the Northern Virginia/ D.C. area but I moved to Galveston to work at the Aquarium at Moody Gardens. I am a marine biologist, so I’m responsible for talking care of my fish and exhibit, SCUBA diving, and giving conservation presentations.

I started CrossFit through FFCF’s New You class. My job is pretty physical, so I wanted to getstronger and be comfortable lifting things safely. I had close to no experience lifting weights or doing any gymnastics movements. The functional fitness of CrossFit has helped me tremendously at work!

I love the camaraderie and community of CrossFit. I was so used to working out by myself, but now I have a whole group of people who want to see me challenge myself and give everything 110%. It’s amazing to be a part of a group of people who want to grow physically and mentally. This positive attitude is infectious and uplifting!

My favorite movement is the box jump. When I first started CrossFit I couldn’t get my feet off the ground to even try one. My fear of falling off and hurting myself gave me this monstrous mental block. There’s something about seeing other people push themselves every day that makes me want to do the same. One day I just made myself do a box jump. I was so happy to overcome such a huge mental challenge. Every time I do box jumps I am reminded of that feeling and I try to apply that to other movements that might scare me.

My advice to someone who wants to try CrossFit is to let go of your fear. That can be fear of being judged, fear of not being able to keep up, or fear of failure. Trust yourself and your body’s ability to adapt and improve. We fail in the gym. Every. Single. Day. We get back up and we get better. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses and we’re all working to make ourselves better athletes!”
